September moors

We seem to make more of good weather in September than we do in the middle of summer – perhaps the feeling of these days being extra unexpected gifts, as the year draws into autumn, and the urge to grab one more last day of summer before we settle down to log fires and winter crafts. Today was hot, and we grabbed at it.

We gathered a picnic and headed up on to the higher moors, and found a lovely place settle and stare at the view.

It was near the Cave-Penney memorial cross, remembering a man of 19 who died in the first world war The area has lots of other marks of history too; hut circles, ancient field markings, disused quarries – which all add to the feeling that this view has been much the same for a long long time.
