Today we had our bonfire, being a job that needs doing and a fun one, and something to be done winter solstice, and anyway we had all these brambles and a cherry laurel (poisonous to sheep I believe) to get rid of.
And we had a new egg. I say new because we have been getting eggs, but only from a blue marans pullet, so our rack is kept full by one chocolate coloured egg a day. But as predicted, the solitice is noticed by the hens (how?)*, and we also had a creamy white egg. My son is very happy, as it is his pet hen Whitey who has come into lay again, and himself insists he is the chicken whisperer because ‘he predicted it’ – also known as ‘he spotted that hen in the nest box’.
Hopefully the other hens, most of whom are now sporting red combs, will also come back into lay.
*ok I doubt they notice the solstice per se, but the lengthening days do seem to trigger the hens into coming back into lay. or maybe they have just had long enough a break…
