Last night found me hastily sorting out the advent boxes – any talk of my son being too grown up for advent was dismissed.
Must admit himself makes me a luck dip advent box, full of little goodies.. pens, little toys and chocs…..these little things can oddly be more special than presents on the big day itself.. but I always maintain all of the fun is in the run up.
So no advent calendars here… but lots of boxes.
The first of December sees ‘Christmas starts here, phase 1’ in this household. Serious festivities begin in a few weeks time, and no holds barred on the solstice, but now a mild beginning. We do the aforementioned advent boxes, I start making mince pies – and will continue to make them until we run out of mincemeat. Usually we run out of time first, but no one wants mincepies when the serious festivities are underway and there are even nicer delicacies to feast on, but in this early part of December, they are very welcome and appreciated.
And we get out our Christmas mugs. One year, when we were dealing with miserable events at the beginning of December, we bought a set of three red reindeer mugs on impulse.. just to cheer ourselves up. And they were very cheery, and so each year, we add to our collection. I don’t understand those that put up their decorations in November etc, but a little mild thingymas cheer in the form of a coffee in a cheery thingymas mug, with a mincepie for elevenses, in the run up is harmless and does ease you into the mood.
