We love spaghetti alla puttanesca and it is so easy to make, I’m not sure why it took so long to get around to it.
The name, famously, translates to ‘whore’s style spaghetti’, and there are many suggestions over why, but to me this is because it is a store cupboard standby dish.
In my mind, and forgive me for the stereotypes here, I imagine the good Italian housewife spends days lovingly sieving tomatoes and cooking deep sauces to go with the hand made pasta. Her son grows up, goes out on the town, meets a girl who invites him over for dinner, and she throws together this dish in minutes from just a few ingredients, and it is delicious!.
The next day he tells Mama all about this lovely girl, with her career and her ability and time to socialise because she uses dried pasta and puts together a sauce from jars and tins. Mama, of course, is unhappy, and pronounces the methods no good and the woman to be a tart, and the rest is history. Or would be if I had not made this story up.
The sauce is really simple and really delicious, and yes really quick. But Mama would be proud of us as we do make the spaghetti ourselves. And homemade pasta is so nice, I really hope Mama and her new daughter in law cooked together sometimes too.
