You may have noticed if you viewed the annual veg patch tour, a lot of my plants are netted. We always have trouble with birds.. but this year has been really really bad. Either the adverse weather conditions have been hard on the birds, or the population has exploded.
I walk past the cabbage bed as I did my animals rounds and realised the PSB seedlings we had lovingly planted were not there. Just sticks.. and on closer looking.. torn up bits of leaves. We netted the rest of the patch, but they moved on to the calabrese anyway, and this is the damage they did through the netting. I saw pigeons bouncing on the net, and pecking what they could through…
Nets have gone higher… but.. we have run out.. as has our favourite net retailer.. besides buying much more will negate any benefit in growing our own veg. So now its rotation.. the broad beans are nearly coming to an end.. we can move those nets on.. and so on..
Oh well, you win some you lose some.
I have this weird image of pigeons trampolining on your nets.
We have been lucky this year, our netting is holding up, or maybe our pigeons are not as intelligent as yours.
I did watch a butterfly go all around the edges of the netting before finding a tiny way in at the very bottom of the netting – cunning little so-an-so!
