We dug our first potatoes this week, and made the most of them yesterday with a meal of ham and cheese quiche, new potatoes and a lovely big salad.
I’ve grown lettuce for years,I like to sow mixed seeds and see what we get, but I think I could seriously get into growing specific salad leaves too. Finding a half tray of peas we missed when planting the last row, I cut the shoots for eating, and along with a big oak leaf lettuce, some spring onions and celery seedlings, and a garlic dressing, it was a very tasty salad.
I’m late coming to the idea of pea shoots. Whilst I agree they are tasty, nicking them from the pea plants seems a good way of holding back your pea crop… just worked out I could grow them as a separate crop. Just like the celery, I want to grow full on adult celery, so useful in so many dishes, but have found celery seedlings, are delicious, and am growing them separately too. I also have sorrel and wild rocket seems to self seed itself in on of the veg patches every year. Need to consider some other contenders too.
