What a beautiful hot summer’s day – and it is only April. We did some work around the place – fixing the netting in the chicken growers run, digging, stringing up the broad beans, then set off for a walk around the lanes and a picnic.
Home to more general chores, animal checks, egg turning, digging etc, then we built a big bonfire and enjoyed the reward of clearing up all that hedging wood and trees so far. Once the fire was steady embers, we dropped over an old bit of weld mesh, and cooked tea. Sausages cooked in the griddle plan, steak and bacon flame grilled, and green beans (last years frozen) cooked in butter and garlic (a new one for me loosely based on this recipe – and is delicious, but seriously what isn’t lovely when cooked in butter and lemon juice?), garlic bread nestled in the embers, followed by a ‘dessert’ of marshmallows. I even mulled some wine.
Well, nice weather comes along only so often, you have to make the most of the chance to eat outdoors.
