Wet weather day. so time for some indoor work. We should have been good and work on the things listed on the goals for 2011, but instead we decided to tackle the horrible pinkness that is our kitchen. Well, I’m going to count that as remodelling the kitchen.
Not only did the previous owner have disastrous taste in colours … predominantly pink, she also dealt with damp by covering up. Slap another layer of gloss paint, a bit of gypsum on top of that.. and so on.
We have been here a few years.. and not keeping up the maintenance of the pinkness. We have refrained from slapping yet more disaster on top. The plaster has bubbled, some bubbles the size of your palm, the salts have come through, and the damp is evident. Every now and then a bit of plaster would fall off.
We, as a family have all been itching to make a start on it.. but the reality is once started we have to follow through. Well, we are committed now. or should be…
That wall is a few feet underground on the other size, and no hope of putting in a French drain or the like as we don’t own the property next door, and another building has been put up against the wall. The mud was wet. and the lime plaster as soft as freshly made…
Possibly the only thing we can do is tank the wall. But we want to try replastering it, with lime plaster, and limewashing it afterwards, and seeing if the damp is kept under control simply by letting it breathe.
After we cleared up, pushed the table back and sat down for dinner, it was already drying up.
It will be a long process, but we shall be so glad to say goodbye to the pink.
