Today we had roast crispy duck, with plum sauce and leek and cucumber.  and it was seriously delicious. And our first home grown duck!

We had planned to try one at twelve weeks,  but that was last week – and last week we found ourselves dealing with the turkeys instead.  So thirteen weeks it was.

Plucking was time-consuming, but ok, and luckily the weather held off long enough.

I thought it looked a tad small, but in fact, it weighed in at 4 lbs 4 oz, undressed.  Plenty of meat, could have gone round 5 people  – as it was we scoffed the lot.

Bit of number crunching later, and we calculate (I mentioned we were geeks right?) they cost about 2/3 s of local price, and that was with the heat lamp cost for raising only four ducks. If we had a bigger hatch rate, the price would go down.

So yes.. a success – we shall be raising duck again in the future 🙂
