We blew some of our craft sales gains on a new toy recently – a small wood turning lathe.
We both love turned wood, and himself is keen on carving and whittling, it seemed like the next step.
Himself is inclined to think courses etc. are for wusses, and his favourite saying is ‘how hard can it be?’ (it’s my job to be the cold hard voice of reason quite often, but in instances where I want the toy too, and don’t want to be bogged down by logic and reality and all that stuff, no cold hard voices of reason are heard).
So, we brought it home, along some starter tools, and a space was magicked for it in the shed, and we found some play time. I was in the garden obsessing over felt making (and I shall turn wood too, I shall, as soon as I have got over my felt obsession….), and himself chose a log off the firewood pile and set to.
Not bad for a first go eh? not sure what wood.. it could be ash, alder, willow, hawthorn, horse chestnut, elm, hazel or sycamore – possibly some other contenders too, as we pretty much will burn anything in our woodburner.
Now we just need a lot more hours in the day.
