Since we moved here, a couple of years ago, we have slowly been working towards being able to harvest and save enough water to meet out needs for the animals and vegetables. We bought a huge ex-juice container, and that has not run out yet.. and we take water from this for the sheep. We set up an IBC that collects water from the piggery roof, and so far the pigs have made little impact on the stored water.. I think it will last out fine.
We set up a water butt off the hen house roof, and that lasts well, and its much easier to fill up the water feeders from there.. but when that is empty we trudge to the juice container butt.
The new greenhouse has its own water butt, and now it has run dry. it is a wonderful luxury to have water just there – but we need to save more – so the plan is to bring an ibc up and set that up instead. And as its in the garden, probably find a way to ‘prettyify’ it with trellis or something.
The old lean to greenhouse has it’s own water butt too -we set up – but its only a diddy one, and there does not appear to be room for any more…
So the solution is to save more water outside, for when that one runs out, and for the outside pots etc.
So – actually we don’t do bad – and just as well since we are on a water meter! – we save enough water for the animals, but need more for the greenhouses and pots.
So to do:
- Move IBC to new greenhosue and make drain from gutter
- make drain from other gutter – should fill twice as fast!
- hide IBC under trellis etc.
- fix gutters to fridge shed
- set up water butt off fridge shed
- look at possibility of bigger water butt in lean to greenhouse
- set up second butt off fridge shed
