congrats on the hens- I was just reading about them on your blog. you might get some little eggs.. but some of our first ones were double yolkers - they would still not fit!

I’m going to add Egg Skelter to my birthday list - (along with the Self sufficientish Bible) - we got our first hens on Friday, including 4 point of lay brown ones but the man on the market said we’d have to wait about 2 weeks for our first eggs (which I expect might be too small to fit on the Skelter).

(And you’ve also got the same bread-bin as me!!)

yes a lot of spinning! but we are still enjoying it, so it is a nice treat. just must remember to get into winter wool processing mode earlier than last year.. we only started in Feb I think.. where does all the tiem go.
Yes, they were pretty clean before hand, although did manage to rubn a load of that moss off the wall in just before the shearer arrived.. oh well it picks out easily enough. and my hands are lovely and soft from all the lanolin!

you could look at hand mowing some of it? or do what we are doing and turn more into veg patch!

I can see it would improve the lawn - cos the only way it is effective is without a collector, and mowing fairly often. this way the cuttings go back onto the lawn, rather than on the compost heap. If you take cuttings away, then you are removing goodies from the land.

Our last neighbour started using a push mower and within a very short time the lawn really improved - it just look so healthy. It was green in every sense of the word!! I would use one but with about 3/4 of an acre to mow…….

well yes - I take your point - in fact ‘bonfire night for all fools day’ is the tradition - and that’s what we ended up doing pretty much. The suggestion is that as teh westcountry is warmer.. breeds have been encuoraged to lamb earlier to allow for good size of lamb by end of summer etc.

but there are other theories on why they did not get into lamb - from bad luck - through to abortion. … who knows. we will try again and take it from there

I wouldn’t have thought that November was too late for the ram to go in, the local sheep farmer always puts his ram in on bonfire night so as most of the bad weather is over by the time he lambs and for the last could of years running I’ve put my goats (not sheep I know but very similar) in kid in my week off over Christmas so am due in a couple of weeks.

maybe I should have made the link a tad more obvious… sorry… but do try it.. its worth it. everyone says it improves with waiting.. hence all the hanging around for a day or two at various stages.
