I hate rats
Nasty dirty creatures, that carry nasty diseases. And they are stealing our eggs. At the moment the rats are winning. In fact, they are expanding their empire, and we have not had an egg all week
We have set traps, and caught only a hedgehog. We are using live catch traps (for this very [...]

yesterday evening, the sun popped out and was surprisingly warm.. as though it was July or something.Today though, the weather forecasters were right with their 100% chance of rain prediction. It has rained hard, all day. Must sort out a rainwater toilet flush system…
We still indulged in more belligerent gardening, well harvesting anyway, and dug [...]

More fun at the hobbies, crafting weekend. We (himself and I) used the peg loom for the first time. We have been dyeing fleece for many months now, and this is what it looks like peg loomed. We need to dye yet more before it’s the right size.
I did not intend it to have so [...]

It’s been raining heavily all afternoon, so aside from regular trips to the hen run to try to collect the eggs before the rats do, I have been indoors, and have done a load of cooking for the weekend.
I made pumpkin scones:
A courgette and feta quiche:
some jam tarts (well you know how it is… left [...]
exploding eggs

The question we had to ask ourselves yesterday, was why were two eggs left behind? And we feared it might be that they were bad, and there was a slight wiff, though that might not have been both.. Although not sure that rats are that discerning, as the eggs were due to hatch today, we [...]
egg theft

the eggs under our broody hen are due to hatch tomorrow. She’s a good girl, sits tight, and only gets off the nest once a day to eat and poo, and we don’t see her, but see the evidence. Today, when he was checking the animals before work, himself saw she was out eating, so [...]

as promised, here are pictures of our ‘chicks’ - they are about 3/4 size of the other hens. They are now 12 weeks old (makes you think about the rate those intensively farmed hens grow eh?)
They are supposed to be marans, and two black ones look like it.. but the golden browney one doesn’t much.
what [...]
no eggs

Egg production has slowed down dramatically, which is annoying given the amount of food eaten. The copper headed marans, pretty birds though they are, and beautiful dark brown eggs, are really not the best of layers. The cream legbar is pretty good actually, but has the occasional day off, and the buff leghorn is sitting [...]
