as promised, here are pictures of our ‘chicks’ - they are about 3/4 size of the other hens. They are now 12 weeks old (makes you think about the rate those intensively farmed hens grow eh?)
They are supposed to be marans, and two black ones look like it.. but the golden browney one doesn’t much.
what [...]

no eggs

Egg production has slowed down dramatically, which is annoying given the amount of food eaten. The copper headed marans, pretty birds though they are, and beautiful dark brown eggs, are really not the best of layers. The cream legbar is pretty good actually, but has the occasional day off, and the buff leghorn is sitting [...]

‘eggs eh?’ said postie this morning ‘yeh’ I said, broody hen you know’ . knowing look from postie… ‘ahhh….’ and a nod
Eggs arrived safe and sound.. well they look it, and after letting them settle for a bit, we slipped them under our broody, who wriggled about and carried on sitting. Fingers crossed.
Funny thing since [...]
broody again

no not me- but our buff leghorn hen has given us an egg every day for the past three weeks, once she started laying again after rearing her brood, and is now sitting again. Is it too soon after the last batch? I am inclined to think not, as she has regained her health, and [...]

We opened up the broody coup a couple of days ago, and the hen and her three chicks, now six weeks old, rushed out into the big wide world. The grass is long and the chicks can hide completely in it!. They are not so much chicks now as chick-hens (guess that’s where the word comes [...]
egg skelter

Another new toy and yes this one was a bit indulgent.. but the egg skelter is so cool, it had to be done.
What a good idea - the eggs are arranged in the order they were laid.. so you eat them in the right order..
take the bottom egg and the rest all roll down; it’s [...]
in search of perfect

One of the best things about growing your own food, is that you get the truth about food, not the perfect unblemished versions the shops would have you believe in. I thought of this today when I collected the eggs, and found a very long and pointy egg. The hen that was not laying has [...]
stupid chickens - stupid people

Despite Stoney pointing out that chickens are better at numeracy than sheep.. they are still stupid.
We have 4 hens… one is brooding her chicks, and one is not laying (and if she keeps this up.. the word ‘casserole’ might be mentioned a bit more), so that leaves us with two hens laying eggs. In the [...]
