it is hard not to get depressed about the garden this year – as so many things are really struggling with the adverse weather conditions – the hot March and cold enough to light a fire June – plus floods and stormy weather.
The broadbeans were flattened. the climbing beans had leaves ripped off or were unwound and eaten by slugs -oh the slugs have had a field day (there’s a pun in there somewhere) and we have lost the sweetcorn, the pumpkins and a lot of squashes,
Blight, I am sure, is just around the corner.
But on the upside, we shall not starve and, although the tree fruit looks rubbish this year, we have a vast harvest still lurking in the freezers. And we picked and ate the very first raspberries and wild strawberries today.

Unfortunately, the forecast doesn’t look much better for July, though the south will be getting the best of a bad lot.
