Bertie and Betty.

Betty is the bigger – she really looked huge as a newborn lamb.. or to my eyes anyway.. certainly bigger than Sharona’s last year – and they seemed pretty sturdy! She’s kind of Friesian..She is pretty fearless.. and nosey..

here she is checking out the chickens…black and white meets black and white…
Bertie is more reserved, but the lamb races and games have begun.

Super photos …lovely lambs !! Betty is gorgeous and Bertie soo cute.
Aaah they look wonderful – I love the smudged face that Betty sports
I love your lambs..I keep looking. I was more than happy with all black but I dooo like Betty
does it tempt you to venture into new coloured sheep? who knows what you cross will give you!
No…. as far as more sheep are concerned, even considering giving up in favour of more poultry.
I hadn’t thought of having anything other than black lambs but a Jacob/Shropshire cross Suffolk could produce anything I guess.
I know just what you mean – we have been discussing it a lot lately – I dont see me giving up having the sheep, we need them as mowers, and we love playing with the wool – spinning, dyeing knitting etc.. but.. we have been discussing not lambing anymore.. because it is just so time consuming and stressful, am enjoying the lambs now they are all springy.. but its a worrying time when they are being born ..etc etc. and we are a bit short of grazing, so dont want to do anything else that would use up any of that grazing etc etc.. but without lambing we would not have to set aside the orchard to have clean grazing to put them on.. we could raise turkeys maybe.. build a bigger growers coup, have more poultry.. etc etc..
So I can definitely relate.
I’m guessing that you were quite taken with Castle farms set up though
I think it made Tim realise what was possible. He came back very positive. I don’t think we have enough years left in us to gain his experience but we could try.
The only trouble with giving up the sheep is Tim does like his lamb but I’m sure we could source that elsewhere.
Also poultry take up a lot more day to day work, where as with sheep most of the work is concentrated into set periods of time.
We’ll see… I think they may become our motto ; )
*they*? that
How cute are they, so wish we had room for some! I guess they are a lot or work and yet you get so much from them with the wool and all.
Regards, Wayne.
Gorgeous! Lamb envy here LOL
Awwww – so cute and they stand still long enough for you to get a photo. That said Ben came running in yesterday saying he thought Silver, the newborn, was unwell but I reassured him she was just having a nap. She’d been rushing round the field with the older lambs forgetting she was only a day old!!
(Actually – did I just email you that via DS?) I’m having a bunged up head cold moment and can’t remember what I have written to who – achooooo)
aww get well soon. i worry about them when they are curled up asleep – cos thats how they go if they die of hypothermia – course its also what they look like when they are just asleep! – a finger under their leg tells you if they are warm – and usually bothering like that makes them get up.. if they get up stretch and have a shake.. everything is fine.
Awwwwww coming out of lurkdom to say that those are some lovely lambs you’ve got there, Betty looks like a particularly lovely lass. Glad to hear they are having lamb races, its a hilariously heartwarming spectacle I always think… my three year old ewes still have lamb races when the summer weather gives them a kick in their heels….
well done for de-lurking! looks like we have a bit in common – from sheep to spun wool
Yup, theres nothing quite like something knit in your own wool, from your own sheep, spun on your own wheel, now if only there was a little more time in the day for spinning…
for spinning.. .carding.. dyeing.. knitting.. crochet.. felting….
Ahhh thankfully I cant crochet so my list is shortened (slightly!!)
Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Betty is so pretty, I’m jealous! Our lambs are pretty but we’ve never had anything like her. Do you think you will keep her or not?
No – we wont be keeping her or her brother – she is lovely to look at though! – I suspect once fully grown the black will appear more brown, and the patches less defined.
