So, having first brandished a crochet hook only a week ago, and since learnt the heady ambitions of chain, slip and treble stitch, I guess it is time to move on to scrumbles. A scrumble is, (among other things if you look it up!), a freeform combination of knitting and crocheting. And this is why I have gone to the effort of learning to crochet, because since I saw the first examples, I want to scrumble. I mean, how hard can it be (!!)
Seriously though, and maybe I’m kidding myself, but I think scrumbling might be a really good way to learn various stitching and motifs.
Also I have this lovely yarn. this came from cold harbour mill and was a bag of scrap yarn, called ‘thrums’. Thrums, are waste lengths of yarn or warp left over from weaving on a loom. They sell bags of this stuff, all different colours, very cheap.. irresistible. The other bags I have are balls of yarn, but this one is relatively short lengths. Ideal for scrumbling. They are hanging up outside as I have washed them ready for using.
I’m really very bad at following other peoples instructions. I always have to tweak recipes, and I really don’t see the point in knitting something someone else might have! So freeform is right up my street. And these thrums are so nice and in my favourite autumnal colours. and I know I am only limiting myself to five knitting projects and now have added crochet too.. but really I’m sure I can find just a little bit of time for some scrumbling..
Beautiful colours !
You have fallen in – in the deep end, thats what crochet does to you – it pulls you in and it is just too darned hard to fight it! Ive not tried scumble yet, a friend of mine does scumbling then adds it to her free form felting – with amazing results … aah felting – you’ve got sheep…they have fleeces….. hmm – is this another promising craft?? Seriously though – its great fun.
yes, I have rather fallen for the whole fibre processing malarky – knitting crochet, not tried felting but it is to come… etc etc. jsut so little time for it at this time of year. we finally sit down around 11pm.. then really ought to go to bed then…. – still winter brings more time for fibrey things
Looking forward to seeing what you create. I love the subtle shades of the scrap yarn – I’m sure whatever you make will be beautiful!
i hope so – I’m worried I can do it justice… but definitely wont unless I try I guess
Hi, just found this web site, and it might be just up your street! happy scumbling

hi Kate – thanks for that – already booked marked it though – PM is, it seems, the queen of scrumble!
I’ve made a start – and its sort of funny because I am definitely trying tio run before I can walk, on the ohter hand, when you are really interested – it drives you on to learn, I find. Have done some spiral motifs etc so far.
