Now that the cockerel run is free, we cleaned out the house, and moved everyone on one. So the six LS chicks are now in the cockerel run, and looking like they appreciate it it a lot, they were pecking about, lying in the shade, avoiding each other, huddling in groups and generally doing what chickens do. They were a bit long in the growers coup – so I think we need to extend our hatching turnaround period; we had previously reckoned on being able to set a new lot of eggs in the incubator every eight weeks, but if we want them to finish at twenty weeks ish, we need to plan on a ten week turn around.
So, the growers coup empty, we were able to move Brown-neck and her charges into there.. which took a bit of doing, but again they seem to appreciate the change, and the fresh grass.
So, I want to set some eggs again now.
Meanwhile, with more mutton coming, we have a bit of a freezer crisis brewing – i.e. the lack of space in freezers, so work on the big freezer plan has taken a step forwards – so we set about gutting the old fridge shed – taking out the old insulation etc from when this place was a diary, and have now taken it back to an empty shell, but keeping the lovely old door still. So some new panelling, and hasty new freezer set up, and we should be ready to receive meat.
The elderflower harvest continues, and we are overwhelmed with elderflowers now, so made yet another batch of cordial, two more batches of elderflower champagne and started another wine demijohn going. As the flowers have to be picked during sunny weather we have to make the most of it.
or.. make cordial while the sun shines.
