I bought a new old sewing machine. I didn’t mean to.. and I have enough sewing machines already..
A rainy day, and so I was sewing, and the bobbin ran out, and as I was rewinding it, once again I worried about when it got lost or broken, as the old machines have pin shaped bobbins that fit into bullet shaped shuttles, and I only have the one my old machine came with. And as that was made in 1892 – would I be able to get more?
And again my mind went to the old sewing machine I had seen in the local charity shop. I admired it, another singer, but different to my current one, and of course it has a bobbin of the right shape. But I don’t need another sewing machine, and it seemed wrong to have it just for the bobbin. I had seen it a few days ago, and only mentioned it to himself today as I knew he would only encourage me to get it.. he loves the engineering, well we both do, and even at £10 is not very indulgent.
We wandered up to take a look, and found it came with a big bag of accessories, including plenty of needles and bobbins, a very old looking instruction book and a singer tin box full of bits. With all these accessories and the fact it had sat forlorn for some days not being snatched up, were too much for me. And now it lives with us. Now, I am going to have to do a lot more sewing to justify having them (oh dear!), as I hate the notion that some people buy these just to collect. They were made for using, and made to last.
I have just looked up the age of my newest old sewing machine, on the singer website - handy that – and found is was made in 1935 in Scotland. So a youngster compared to my other one!
It’s lovely! It would have been a pity had it gone to someone who’d use it only for dislpay, so I’m sure it’s better off with you. 10 pounds, did you say? Incredible!

thanks Jandra
yes only 10 pounds. in fact it said “£10 or offers” but 10 quid seemed cheap to me, and it was a charity shop, so a good cause. besides, i am rubbish at haggling!
Lovely indeed! Interesting that you should post this only days after I realised that I “need” a treadle sewing machine… My first sewing machine was a hand-powered Singer – I rather wish I still had it.
look at it this way – you need it.. and it will last forever… postively *good* to get one!
am I helping?
That’s one very beautiful sewing machine
Oooooooooooh, that’s so pretty…..
I have a Singer like the one in the picture (Above) handed to me by my Mother. If you know of anyone who may be interested in it please let me know.
Thank You
people always like them – you could try freecycle?
