The vaccination has arrived in our area and our three girls and ram lamb have all been injected. Should have immunity within a few weeks, apparently. We shared a bottle with a neighbour, and she gave us a hand with the stabbing bit, which went pretty well, although it was interesting to notice how less at ease they were with someone new. Stranger danger eh… The injecting bit was a doddle, and himself did three of them - seems his needle phobia does not apply to sheep. But that’s the truth of livestock keeping.. you can’t afford to have areas of ‘don’t do’ - I don’t care for maggots either, but got over it when it was a matter of keeping a ewe alive.
Rogan the lamb is doing well, a good size. He was most put out to find we can do nasty things.. so far we have been a source of amusement and the occasional ivy leaf. Still he got over it quickly.
Isn’t it great! I really didn’t think we’d get all vaccinated up before the threat.
How are your vets arranging vaccination for small numbers? I’d be interested to know.
I have a baby calf that will be a month by the next vaccination, so that’s good, but I’ve also got a couple of imminent calvings and as far as I can see it’s going to be difficult to get these calves immunised. It must be the same for a lot of farms I guess .My vets, to date, don’t know how they’re going to get around this predicament.
yeh a relief, done all we can now. and only having sheep, thats us done now.
Well the vet called and said they would be opening a bottle yesterday and we could come and get the ml we need. Great - saves us buying a whole 20ml bottle. Arranged to collect when himself finished work,… and was told that as the bottle had been open all day.. it was past it’s 8 hour deadline.. so good plan.. gone wrong. So we went and bought the 20ml bottle anyway, and shared with a neighbour, as I said. So hopefully the vets will have some sort of scheme like this that will suit you? Perhaps you could suggest it. a planned opening and sharing of a bottle.
