I just stepped outside to release a mouse the cat had so kindly brought in. Not so bad when they are dead, even better when he eats them, but when he brings them in to play.. they usually hide in the house and end up staying. I had to catch it.
Wasn’t all bad, in the wee hours, most of the village is in darkness, and the stars are out in full glory. The plough is visible, as is the milky way. I saw a falling star. The air was full of the scent of mock orange, and all I could hear was the distant river in full spate.
Earlier in the day we had a sudden downpour that turned into a minor flash flood. The heavens truly opened and I watched as the road flooded. Next door’s gutters are broken and the water avoids the drain and heads off down the green lane, along with new streams pouring off the field. It all accumulated by our meal shed, but the trench himself dug during lambing week is still doing its stuff, and the shed was dry this time. I was out there in my raincoat and wellies kicking the drains clear and making sure all was well and generally muttering about it being May and summer and all… still at least all the water butts are full and the plants well watered…
And now tonight the rain has gone and the stars are out, and stood there it seemed like no one else was looking.
