Don’t normally celebrate St George’s day - not particularly. After all.. we eat a lot of typically English food already etc.
I was pondering what I could cook… I googled and found one supermarket suggesting we make things with tomatoes and courgettes. Obviously, at this time of year, they would be imported tomatoes and courgettes.. which seems to have lost the plot.
I do a good beef Wellington, if I do say so myself, but it’s pricey, celebration food. Fillet of beef, and homemade chicken liver pate go into mine.. pricey and takes planning.
Shepherds pie.. but really the potato is not from here.. and what about the English cup of tea? that’s imported too. Then I thought.. I’m nitpicking… after all St George was far from English, in fact, unlikely he ever came here, let alone slayed any dragons (poor ol dragons). The whole idea of St George being the patron saint of England is said to originate from Richard the Lionheart.. and let’s face it.. he was French!
Richard the Lionheart is romanticised about alot… but I see him as a warmonger.. and obviously set out to kill people for having a different religious belief. Not exactly my idea of a hero. Leaves me wondering why on earth I would want to mark and celebrate this day.
Well, of course, I am not celebrating Richard the Lionheart, or St George.. but being English. I’m not sure I need to celebrate it exactly.. other than the usual, ‘don’t pass up a celebration’ idea.
And so, settled on a cream tea. Very English.. in fact.. to be specific.. very Devonian. And yes.. I am proud of that.
Of course this post should be accompanied with a picture of a warm homemade scone, with a large helping of clotted cream, and topped with homemade strawberry jam… but we ate the evidence.
Think we might have to celebrate being Devonian more often….
Scones & homemade strawberry jam … you’re cruel to tease like that - it sounds SOOO good!
Mmmmmmmmm….. cream tea………
Much better than eating barbecued dragon, imho. =)
Joy - I must admit .. it was pretty good…
Hamster - barbecued dragon!…hmm there is a whole St Georges bbq range there..
