all change
5 April 2008 by colouritgreen
This time last week, we were sitting in front of the fire, himself spinning, me knitting. Since then, everything seems to have changed, and not just the clocks. We seem to have lurched forward into ’summer’ with an almost audible pop. Later that night we were wearing woolly hats, and raincoats, waiting in the dark for Sharona to lamb. The next day it rained and rained and rained… the water poured off the fields, flooded outbuildings, and made the fields and paths into mud reminiscent of festival campsites. Wellies were obligitory wear.
The clocks changed to summer time. I hate that ‘they’ insist on messing with the time, I feel it should be left alone, but usually we rejoice at the Spring change as suddenly we have so much more time in the evenings to garden etc. We barely noticed this year, jet-lagged, or is that lamb-lagged by our watching vigil, our attempts to keep the two smaller triplets alive. Only I noticed we seem to be eating dinner an hour later than usual…
With the clocks changing, and new life, with the first lamb, and chicks, summer suddenly arrived. We have had three hot days. I wore no jumper for two of them, and my son and I - both fair skinned, got a little too much sun. We swapped the woolly hats for sunblock. The mud dried up. It’s made me think of last year, and how April was hot. and about fly strike. Before anyone tells me again, that it’s far too early for flystrike. one of ours got struck last April…
The grass is growing.. thankfully, as we are short again, butterflies fly past, birds go by with nest material. And tomorrow we are to expect a hard frost and biting north winds, the expectation of snow.
All change again.
