the wonder of PSB

I know I have gone on lately about how nice PSB (purple spouting broccoli) is- but it really is a great veg. This is our first year of growing it.. can you tell?!
But there it is, filling the ‘hungry gap’ with something we actually like! - we only put in one row, helped it through the early months against slugs and caterpillars.. just by collecting the blighters.. and then ignored them. The first harvest came just before Christmas (well I did choose the variety ‘Rudolph’) and we have been eating up until now - three months - and we have had it at least 3 times a week, sometimes more. We only cook it for about 10 minutes, steamed, so little energy, and lots of saved vitamins. Next year I will do two varieties.. for an even longer season.
It’s a great ‘cut and come again’ veg, the big spears first, then a second crop of smaller ones.. and so on. The last crop we had was lots and lots of very small spears - thumb size. ~but still sweet and crunchy. I have used these smaller ones in quiches - or we just have a large heap each.
Today I made PSB fritters, using the tenderest small spears.. and our own eggs. Served hot with a good dollop of sweet curried green tomato chutney - they went down a treat, the family declared it a winner and on the ‘do again’ list. Took me twenty minutes, and that includes picking the PSB (no trips to multiple supermarkets.. no tins opened - good honest, cheap. high in vitamins food, so in ya face Delia!)
Sadly we are at the end of this year’s crop, but still the plants benefit us.. or rather the sheep, as I pull them up and hand feed them as a treat.
