Every year I try and make my own hot cross buns, and every year, the results are something like rock cakes..(not my intention!).This year I have cracked it!
I don’t object to the putting of crosses on top, I am sure the tradition of hot cross buns goes back further than Christianity - certainly the use of the cross as a symbol of luck (as in crossing your fingers) or more goes way back - just I can’t be bothered to make the goo to do the crosses with… and we have hot not cross buns. Either way they are spicy and warm and sticky and delicious with butter.. and after working outside in the cold, coming into a kitchen filled with the warm spicy smell, certainly lifts your spirits.
They look scrumptious. And as you say, that warm yeasty, spicy smell wraps one in cosy wellbeing.
Just going to make mine now!
The cross, I am sure it is pagan in origin
Yep I was right,

let us know how you get on MLA!
As I’m bed ridden at the moment there have been no hot cross buns in our house this Easter but having seen yours, I really really fancy one. My OH is here this week so I’ll have to dispatch him to the baker’s on Tuesday to get some.
As for the crosses, who needs ‘em? Currant buns are gorgeous with or without.
Well they tasted fine, although I think the yeast was a little old. I usually use another yeast and should have stuck to that.
We had/have some quails eggs in the incubator and bang on cue half hatched this morning!
Sharon - sorry to hear you are bed ridden - hope you get those hot cross buns soon
MLA - what can you do? have to make a second batch! (oh dear!!)
quails eh? I fancy keeping quail - it’s on the list…
These are button quails, unfortunately mum and dad escaped through the electric fence never to be seen again….and I dare say made a tasty meal for something!
I am hoping these will be tame enough they won’t do that.
As for another batch, that’s for another day. Today we are going up to Stoneheads, well trying. We have very spring like weather, he has heavy snow and blizzard conditions earlier. He is no more than 2 hours from me!
