grass cutting

First grass cut of the year.. I mean our lawn, not the field.
Annoying, because:
-
It’s time consuming,
-
we have too much lawn grass and are short of field grass.. but I cannot think of a way to change that, our garden area does not lend itself to grazing, (well not without the risk of sheep wandering into the village),
-
and to top it off, its the only area on our patch we use fossil fueled machinery to work.. we dig by hand, we hedge by hand, we log by hand, we carry by hand.. and we mow with a mower. (boo)
Himself has a scythe, and is considering buying a blade more suited to lawn making than hay making.. but it would be very time consuming..
The best we can do is turn as much lawn into vegetable patch as we can. We are getting there, having erected the new large greenhouse, and dug two large veg beds. I pulled the pretty flowers out of the round ornamental bed and had pretty courgettes instead, and this year we have filled it in and are having another huge rectangular bed instead.
There is only so much digging we can do by hand though… particularly if you are wasting the valuable hours of daylight/good weather by mowing the lawn.. catch 22 in a way..
