seed swapping
14 March 2008 by colouritgreen
Spending a fair bit of time in the old greenhouse these days, sowing seeds, particularly as I have preference for starting most things off in modules, including beetroot and beet spinach - worked well for me last year, and we have such a large slug population, it being a mild yet rainy sort of place, that it is good to give things a little head start.
One thing I have just started to dabble in is seed swapping. There is a local allotment group that has gatherings, but I am not immensely organised and usually miss it!, but the other way is through some of the forums I visit.
Not all seeds are good from year to year. Peas, I think , it’s not worth hanging on to the packet - the germination rate the next year will be a lot lower. Whereas courgettes and tomatoes seem to last for years and years.
I grew enough sage plants from seed to last me for some years, as they are perennial, and was happy to pass on the rest of the packet in an exchange. Got in return some piment d’espelette chili seeds.
Nice to make contact with others doing the same thing, seed are not wasted and we get something new and interesting to try for the price of a stamp
Everyone is a winner.
