frog love in
23 February 2008 by colouritgreen
Finally we had some rain yesterday - the first in ages, and that seems to have inspired the start of this year’s frog migration.
Although I had already reported the first sighting of frogspawn, earlier this month, now it has all truly begun, a big green gathering of their own
At night, the garden, drive and lane are all covered in frogs, all making their way to the pond to mate. I can hear their chirping at night from my bedroom, and if we have to go out after dark, have to go armed with a torch and adopt a shuffly sort of walk, so as not to bring a not so pleasant end to the frog’s loving intentions. If we drive in after dark, one of us has to leap out and clear the lane of frogs, before bringing the car in!
Last night I counted over 40 frogs, before I gave up. The garden is covered with the same number of newcomers, making their way to the water again tonight. I really like it, we go out with the torch, and the same frogs that make themselves scarce during daylight hours, are so easily seen, along with newts.
There seem to be a lot more boys than girls, and the boys are all chirping for a mate.. apart from the ones that have found one, who are keeping shtum
