We’ve had some strange egg laying these last few days, but this is typical of chickens at the beginning or end of their laying days.
Yesterday we had no eggs, the day before we had 5, one in the open air (chicken just started laying, prolly got surprised!), two under the house, two in the box and a broken shell-less one on the hen house floor. These soft shell eggs do happen from time to time.
Today 6 eggs,, and as you can see one of them is HUGE! - we have already had one double-yolker but this one is much bigger.. its bigger than ducks eggs - the other eggs in the picture are all normal size. Looking forward to cracking open that one.
.. poor girl, no wonder she was in the box for so long…..
note to self….must source and buy some replacement hens!
What are the blue eggs from? Cream legbars?
What other breed do you have?
yes the blue eggs are from a cream legbar
the brown eggs are from our two copper headed marans, and the white eggs are from the buff leghorn. I can imagine getting buff leghorn again, as she has been a good layer since she started.. reliably giving us an egg most days, wheras the cream legbar is a bit on and off.
We always had any old hens when I was a kid, and always wanted different coloured eggs, and so indulged.
Ouch!
When I went to let out our hens yesterday, and feed them, one hopped off the nest box. She then laid her egg on the ground as she pecked the feed!
ouch in deed - I was a bit worried about her!.. but she seems fine and has laid an egg a day since. daft hens eh..
