I dislike the tat that comes with valentines day.. and that feeling of compulsion.. that people *should* do something. In fact the shops would have you believe you *should* show your love by buying something red and tacky.. erm.. nope.
But we did have fun today, my son and I making heart shaped food - just for fun.
We made heart shaped cheese scones

and surprised himself, who was working at home today, with heart shaped eggs for lunch. Clever hens eh? or perhaps we cheated and fried them inside a cutter..

followed by heart biscuits. We used the spicey biscuits recipe, and left out the spices, and added icing instead. The icing is just icing sugar water and food colouring.

and the the finale, heart pizzas. Made a simple pizza dough, and topped with the last of the roasted tomato sauce. We made one each, and everyone got to choose their favourite toppings.

So I guess tacky in our own way, but fun, edible and no purchases, so frugal too.
My son just said to me ‘thankyou for our heart shaped day!’ so it was all worthwhile.
Those were all wonderful! How great to be a recipient of your and your son’s culinary devotion! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Shu
thanks Shu! was fun, hope you had a good day too.
What lovely ideas! They beat all that tacky rubbish that shops bung down your throat, that’s for sure.
I’m totally with you on this. I really don’t like Valentine’s Day… it means absolutely nothing to me. It’s the little things that couples do for each other throughout the year that really mean something, not a singing, dancing card and ridiculously expensive chocolates in a foil covered heart shaped box!
I personally refuse to have anything to do with it but my ‘friend’ always buys a card and then gets upset when he doesn’t get one back. What’s a girl to do?
I’ve never like valentines.. when you don’t have somebody to share it with you feel sad, if you do have someone to share it with and they don’t bother, that’s probably worse!
I’ve made it our own, and we celebrate it in our own way !
