hazelnuts and apples

some last ofs. Himself cracked the last of the hazelnuts we harvested last Autumn, roasted them, and made the last batch of hazelnut chocolate chip cookies. Shall miss them, but this is seasonal eating I guess. We didn’t do anything fancy to store them, they have just been lurking in a bowl with the nutcracker.
Also took the last of the apples out of storage.. well a shed. They have lasted pretty well, but lately have had to pick out a few brown ones. With the recent spell of sunny weather.. it became more picking out the good ones, and some had been got at by mice. But still not bad.. Harvesting in August and stored until February. Gathered the remaining decent ones, a colander full, and the rest went on the compost heap.
I have been working my way through them as fast as I could - but even with buying a second upright freezer, we just did not have the space. Each time we ate some of our home grown veg from the freezer, I would fill that space with more sliced or stewed apples! Hopefully now we shall be starting to empty the freezer in time for the next harvest. That’s if I don’t fill it with something else..
Haven’t got any food stored (yet!) but I finished last year’s rhubarb schnapps the other day. It was a very sad moment!
I really want to try those hazelnut chocolate chip cookies now… Sound delicious!
they are delicious.. sad that we wont be having them for some months now!. The problem with food storage, is its slightly addictive. We have far too much jam stored up!
Rhubarb schnapps sounds good..
