clay pipe time line
22 January 2008 by colouritgreen
as predicted, the second clay pipe we found (the ribby one) is much younger than the first, and according to our local expert Heather Coleman
This is what we call a ribbed design, series of wide lines with a sort of shell like pattern. They seem to come into fashion in England around 1800 and reach a peak in about 1850. They were still used right through until the 1930’s.You piece I think could date back to about 1825-1860
So, here is the time line… around about 1670 someone breaks his pipe (top picture) , curses and chucks it in the rubbish pile. About 2oo years later, someone else breaks his pipe (bottom picture), curses and chucks it pretty much in the same rubbish pile.
About 200 years later non smoking me picks up other peoples rubbish and gets all excited.
Well I think it’s kind of cool…
