clay tobacco pipe

Found a second complete bowl from an old tobacco pipe. Just lying there on the surface of a veg bed. Nothing like a bit of rain (and we have had a bit more than a bit!) to wash out these pipes. We usually find lots of stem bits.. but a bowl is very special. I have emailed the local expert again and hope she will give us a date. I think its a bit younger than the last piece.
The rain is frustrating as it does hinder how much we can get done outside. But we did manage to whump in some posts around the new damson and plum trees, sawed up some waste wood from the old wall (a lot of it blew away in the wind, not kidding, and what is left will burn fast with all those worm holes), started to de-ivy an apple tree.
Also I made some ‘Christmas muffins’ from a recipe from the New Rayburn Cook Book - basically its a standard muffin mix, but you stick a spoonful of mincemeat in the middle of the batter before you cook it. I was using up a half a jar of homemade mincemeat left over from that winter festival thingy. Waste not want not an all that. Actually they worked out really good - nothing like mincepies (a good thing as it feels very out of season now) but more like sticky currant bun meets muffin.
I love finding ‘old stuff’ in the garden…we regularly get the ubiquitous blue & white china, brown earthenware and stems of pipes (no bowls yet).
As a kid I found a George II farthing when I was looking for stones to skim across the river - it was perfect for skimming (round and flat) - but I kept it (and still have it in a box).
yes - there is always that blue and white china. and I suspect the brown earthenware is pretty old stuff. We have not been lucky enough to find any coins yet though, so well done on your farthing. We did find a big old key a few months back. We are still waiting to find the big treasure chest it fits…..
