previously enjoyed furniture..

sometimes they also call it ‘antique’, hoping that these whimsical titles will make secondhand and well used furniture more appealing.
It appeals to me anyway.
Makes sense all round if you think about it.. you can buy something much cheaper than from a new furniture shop, it makes far more sense from an environmental point of view - the old furniture is reused, no new trees have to be cut down, transported, cut, processed and preserved, and you can find something with more character, and not the same as everyone else, and usually the items are stronger and solid: oak tables and dressers.. etc.
Our kitchen table is perfect - its just the right size, opens up if we need more table, has ornate legs and a well used scrubbed top, is solid oak and cost £45. We would not have found anything suitable, never-mind as nice, in the new furniture shops.. and not for that budget!
But for me I like the age of the wooden items. Not because of that fibbing ‘antique’ label, but because of the worn edges, the nicks and bumps, the general feel of the wood.. of its previous life in a different home - and mostly because I can add to the nicks and bumps and put my coffee cup down on the surface without a worry, as I don’t have to keep it pristine!
